Do you need a Cobalt Drill?
The answer is No. However, if you are drilling hardened stainless, and quite a lot of holes that’s another story.
Tools you need for drilling stainless (304, 316)
A Good Quality M2 HSS drill bits, cutting oil and drill press or power drill is all you need, of course to deburr the edge, ideally to use countersunk drill, but pencil deburrer does the trick too.
So, what’s the secret here?
- To start with a pilot hole just under half the final hole size
- Allow enough lube to keep the drill bit cool
- and use medium pressure as well as keeping the drill at a low speed
